The Three Kinds of Spending

Learn a simple, durable way to sort every dollar.

About 5 minutes

Learn

Every outflow fits one of three groups: Needs (keeps life running), Financial Priorities (savings, debt reduction, investing) and Wants (everything chosen for enjoyment).

This framework is deliberately coarse. Fine-grained budget categories collapse under real life; three groups survive it.

The goal is not to shrink Wants to zero. It is to know the proportion you are choosing.

Do

Read your last 30 days of transactions and mentally tag five of them with one of the three groups.

Think About It

Which of the three groups do you think currently takes the largest share?
